FIREBIRD - A Mixed Bill
Marking their third successful season, the award-winning London City Ballet, former resident company of Sadler’s Wells, return this September with a unique offering of heritage works.
In this centenary year of American choreographer Glen Tetley, we celebrate and pay homage by reviving his gothic retelling of the Firebird. Originally made for the Royal Danish Ballet, this fresh take illustrates a young woman breaking free from the constraints of a controlling family - a pioneer flying the nest, embracing her differences and liberating her peers. For this revival the ballet’s original designer, Olivier award winning John Macfarlane will revisit his original designs for London City Ballet.
Mephisto Waltz by Ashley Page, an exuberant curtain raiser perfect to introduce the technical prowess of each dancer of the company, opens the performance and from London City Ballet’s recent performance at the Royal Opera House’s Linbury Theatre, Jerome Robbins’ lost gem Quiet City, returns to the stage, meeting a taste of the new as the company proudly introduce rising Choreographic star Tasha Chu with her latest work Soon.
Recognised by the Critics Circle at the National Dance Awards winning Best Independent Company, London City Ballet has found its feet and is forging new, fascinating paths ahead.
Firebird is a co-production with York Theatre Royal & the Opera de Vichy, France.
