★★★★★ “A magical, thought-provoking lesson in learning to slow down”
- The Irish Times
★★★★"A simple take simply told, making for a joyfully delightful, A+ experience”
- The Arts Review
This is a story about an ant called Amy (an award-winning ant one might add), her brother Andy and a Brown Spider. Amy the ant works very hard.
When she wins the Employee of the Month Award, Amy feels a happiness that drives her to work even harder. But is she truly content? With the help of the Brown Spider, Amy learns to find true happiness by appreciating the world around her and celebrating her brother’s memory in the everyday. A charming and moving story about a busy little ant who learns to slow down.
Thank you so much for deciding to bring your young people to see my show at the wonderful Egg Theatre.
I’m Julie Sharkey. The girl who wrote and who acts in An Ant Called Amy.
The play is about a little ant called Amy, her brother Andy and a Brown Spider.
The idea for the play originated after I lost my own brother tragically. His two small children were aged two and one at the time.
It got me thinking about how a small person might begin to comprehend and deal with grief.
In my little play, Amy the ant is missing her brother, Andy.
This is a gentle tale. It’s entertaining and fun. It’s not going to uncover an awful truth or discuss serious illness or anything traumatic.
Simply, we meet this little ant Amy, who is working to forget…. Until her supposed arch enemy the Brown Spider gently nudges her to find Andy in the everyday.
