Following the enormous success of last season’s Machinal, multi-Olivier-award-winning theatre and opera director Richard Jones returns to the Ustinov Studio to direct Harold Pinter’s classic comedy of menace, The Birthday Party.

A seemingly innocent birthday party in a rundown seaside boarding house becomes a full-on nightmare when two sinister strangers arrive unexpectedly.

The Birthday Party is arguably Harold Pinter’s most notable work. First performed in 1958, this celebrated modern classic remains one of his most performed plays.

Richard Jones CBE has directed for the international stage for over 30 years. His award-winning productions of theatre and opera have played on some of London’s largest stages including the National Theatre, Coliseum and Royal Opera House.

Last year in Deborah Warner’s second season as Artistic Director, Richard Jones brought his unique talent for epic scale to the powerful intimacy of the Ustinov Studio with an electrifying production of Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal. Described as ‘One of the great theatre nights of the decade’ (WhatsOnStage), Machinal received glowing reviews across the board and a transfer to The Old Vic was recently announced with performances from 11 April.
