Event Information

Ustinov Studio July/August 2022

Deborah Warner, one of the greatest Shakespearean directors of her generation, opens her inaugural season as Artistic Director of the Ustinov Studio with an epic new production of The Tempest.

Nicholas Woodeson as Prospero and Dickie Beau as Ariel lead a stellar company of actors, many of whom have worked on previous landmark Deborah Warner Shakespearean productions. The cast includes Edward Hogg as Caliban, Finbar Lynch as Antonio, Gary Sefton as Stephano, William Chubb as Gonzalo, Pierro Niel-Mee as Ferdinand and, making her professional debut, Tanvi Virmani as Miranda.

Set on an enchanted island The Tempest deals with magic, love, treachery, transformations, the visible and the invisible. In Caliban, Ariel, and of course Prospero, Shakespeare created three of his most memorable and enigmatic characters. As with all his ‘late plays’, man’s complex and troubled journey from the desire for revenge to the path of mercy is centre stage. When Prospero takes his enemies hostage, the path is set for a traditional revenge drama, but instead ends in redemption, restoration and renewal.

Deborah Warner’s previous Shakespeare productions include Julius Caesar at the Barbican and across Europe, starring Simon Russell Beale and Ralph Fiennes; productions of King Lear starring Glenda Jackson and Brian Cox in the title role; and a ground breaking production of Richard II starring Fiona Shaw in the title role.

Deborah Warner will be joined by her regular artistic collaborators, representing some of Europe’s finest creative talent including, from Austria, designer Christof Hertzer; from France lighting designer Jean Kalman and from Ireland, sound designer Mel Mercier.
