Actor and facilitator Alice Barclay leads the first of three weekend-long ‘stagings’ of some of the best contemporary plays from the last few decades.

The focus for this weekend falls on Mike Bartlett’s brilliantly lurid panorama, Earthquakes in London. Spanning several centuries (most of them in the future) and originally co-produced by the National Theatre in 2010, this was a play that marked Bartlett out as one of the most bold, big-thinking and ambitious playwrights alive.

Across the two days, you’ll read, discuss and wrestle with the texts, exploring the themes, characters and stories through a series of practical exercises, before (quickly!) getting them on their feet for a semi-staged performance of each, to an invited audience.

About the play:

Burlesque strip shows, bad dreams, social breakdown, population explosion, worldwide paranoia. A fast and furious metropolitan crash of people, scenes and decades, as three sisters attempt to navigate their dislocated lives and loves, while their dysfunctional father, a brilliant scientist, predicts global catastrophe.

An all-pervasive fear of the future and a guilty pleasure in the excesses of the present drive Mike Bartlett’s epic rollercoaster of a play from 1968 to 2525 and back again.

“This demented carnival confirms Bartlett as one of our most exciting young playwrights.”Evening Standard

“Does its job of reminding us just how precarious our exhistance is.”The Telegraph
