Gladys Deacon was a beguiling, clever, independent woman with countless admirers who was the brightest star of the Belle Epoque.

Hugo Vickers is a writer, lecturer, broadcaster and an acknowledged expert on the Royal Family. In addition to talking about The Sphinx, his fascinating talk will cover meeting Gladys as a teenager and being so fascinated by her story that it influenced him to become a writer; the intricacies of writing about the Royal Family; His views on The Crown; Working on films including The King’s Speech; writing obituaries, and the challenges of briefing American media on royal etiquette.

LUNCH: Roast chicken, potato terrine, beans, bacon and mustard cream.

V: Cauliflower steak, potato terrine, beans and mustard cream sauce.
