The Secret Life of The Savoy

Event Information

Fri 3 Sep

In 1889, Victorian impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte opened The Savoy, Britain’s first luxury hotel.  Allowing the rich to live like royalty, it attracted glamour, scandal and a cast of eccentric characters.  This book tells their story through three generations including Richard who made his fortune from the Gilbert & Sullivan operas.

Thespians, bohemians, aristocrats, royalty, pop stars and Hollywood actors all came to the Savoy. The character list reads like a who’s who of Victorian and 20th Century public life, ranging from Oscar Wilde and Monet to Marilyn Monroe and the Beatles.

Scandals and Parties abound behind closed doors, all of which are revealed in this fascinating book.

Olivia Williams graduated from Oxford with a scholarship in Modern History and won the Rupert Murdoch prize for student journalism.
