… or … The Way of the Wives… or School for Men

Prepare for an evening of decadent goings on, illicit relationships and foppish foolery in a brand new mash-up of Restoration Comedy.

For as long as anyone can remember, whispers have wafted through the backstage passageways and scenery docks of Britain’s playhouses, telling tales of an ingenious comedy masterpiece from the Restoration era. Now, after years of searching, the Natural Theatre Company has recovered fragments of this long-lost manuscript, and finally, the mysterious play will be brought to light.

Written by Lady Lydia de Fame in 1700, The Pessimist was stolen before it could be performed. It was kept hidden for 320 years by her jealous contemporaries who feared the masterpiece would outshine their own works. Some scenes were stolen, and many of the key roles have turned up elsewhere.

The Naturals have pieced together the surviving fragments of manuscript and will finally give The Pessimist the premiere it deserves – in a whirlwind Comedy of Manners, with hilariously silly characters, razor-sharp wit and, of course, a liberal serving of scandal.

This year, the Natural Theatre Company celebrate 50 years of making people laugh in the most surprising places. Come and join us for the Company’s long-awaited return to the Theatre Royal!
