Summer Company 2018 – Application Form

Summer Company is the Theatre Royal Bath’s summer school in which young people work alongside a professional creative team to create a spectacular performance at the egg theatre over three weeks.

Who can take part?  Anyone aged 12-18 (acting places) or 14-18 (backstage places) can take part, regardless of experience. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis, upon completion of a returned application form.

Kick-start workshop: Friday 22nd June, 6pm-8pm. A chance to have a taste of what Summer Company life is like and the building you’ll be working in. Working with the Director and Producer, acting and backstage participants can meet one another, undertake role-specific activities, and find out more about the production. If you cannot make the kick-start workshop, please make a note on your application form.

Dates and Times: The project runs from Monday 6th August – Sunday 26th August inclusive. The first two weeks are rehearsals for actors and technical & creative workshops for backstage. Registration is from 10am, with sessions running from 10.30am-4pm, Monday to Friday. There will be additional calls 4-6pm and possible Saturday mornings. You will be notified of these in advance by the Producer, Director or Stage Manager. You must be available for all of the days during the process.

In the final week performances take place from Thursday 23rd – Sunday 26th August daily. During this week you will also be called for longer rehearsals, which could be until 10pm.

Venue: The project takes place at the egg, Theatre Royal Bath, Sawclose, Bath BA1 1ET.

Staff: Full supervision is provided during scheduled rehearsals. All staff are DBS checked and at least two members of staff at any one time are first aid trained.

Food: You will need to bring a packed lunch and water each day; no refreshments are provided. There is a café on site, as well as many shops and food outlets nearby.

How to Apply: Complete the application form and return it to the egg along with full payment (aside from Advanced Backstage places).  We will then contact you by email to confirm your place. If you’re applying for a bursary please return your completed application form with a completed bursary form.

Acting places are for ages 12-18, priced at £350 (SOLD OUT)

There are thirty acting places available. The cast work closely with the director and other visiting theatre professionals (such as a Voice Coach and Movement Director) to get the play on its feet in the two weeks before production week! Casting takes place through group workshops at the beginning of the process, and the focus is on working as an ensemble, supporting one another to make the show the best it can be!

Backstage places are for ages 14-18, priced at £225

There are eight backstage places available, offering young people the chance to explore the world of costume, prop-making, stage management, lighting, sound and the technical workings of a professional theatre. You will receive masterclasses with the Creative Team and go offsite for various sourcing and research trips.

Advanced Backstage places are for ages 16-18, priced at £250 New to this year!

There are two opportunities available for Assistant to the Director and Assistant to the Designer. These bespoke roles are suitable for those looking to pursue further training or a career in directing or costume/set design. They will include an invitation to be involved in the pre-production process, such as undertaking research and attending production meetings prior to the 6th August. Those applying for the Assistant to the Designer may also wish to include their portfolio or design images. We will then be in touch to arrange an interview and places will be offered to individuals following a successful interview.

Bursary Places: Limited bursary places are available. For a bursary application form to receive a 25%, 50% or 75% discount, please email Lindsay.baker@theatreroyal.org.uk. Bursaries can be offered for all roles- Acting and Backstage places, as well as the Advanced Backstage roles.

Please note: Meals, overnight accommodation and travel are not included in the price of the project.
