Event Information

Showing on Fri 5 Mar

An Illustrated talk with the writer, lecturer, broadcaster and an acknowledged expert on the Royal Family, Hugo Vickers.

To coincide with the publication of two biographies on Gladys Deacon, Duchess of Marlborough and Royal Photographer Cecil Beaton, Hugo Vickers will talk about these fascinating subjects.

Gladys Deacon was a beguiling, clever, independent woman with countless admirers who was the brightest star of the Belle Epoque. Cecil Beaton was one of Britain’s greatest cultural icons – not just a photographer capturing some of the most celebrated portraits of the 20th century, but also a designer of the iconic sets and costumes for the films My Fair Lady and Gigi. Beaton personally chose Hugo Vickers to be his biographer entrusting him with his letters and diaries.

Other subjects discussed will include the intricacies of writing about the Royal Family, his views on The Crown and the dangers of viewers believing that everything they see is true, working on films including The King’s Speech and the challenges of briefing American media on royal etiquette.
