★★★★  “Stark and striking and really quite BRILLIANT The Stage

“This is theatre at its dazzling, complex, most beautiful best” The Bath Magazine

An undoubted 20th century masterpiece, Peter Shaffer’s Equus exploded onto the scene in 1973 and went on to become a huge worldwide hit. Inspired by a true story, this dazzling thriller plumbs the darkest recesses of the human psyche as it explores the complex relationships between passion, sex, religion and sanity.

When teenager Alan Strang’s pathological fascination with horses leads him to commit a devastating act of violence, psychiatrist Dr. Martin Dysart reluctantly accepts the task of uncovering what actually happened the night the crime was committed. But as Dysart delves further and further into Alan’s twisted world, he is forced to question his own sanity and motivations.

This bold new staging, directed by the award-winning Ned Bennett, is a co-production between UK Theatre Award winners English Touring Theatre, one of the UK’s most successful and exciting production companies celebrating their 25th anniversary season, and the legendary Theatre Royal Stratford East. Peter Shaffer’s multi award-winning work also includes Amadeus, Black Comedy, Lettice and Lovage and The Royal Hunt of the Sun.

Trigger Warnings: EQUUS is a psychological thriller that contains themes of violence and discussions of mental health issues. The play contains scenes of sexual violence, full frontal nudity and strong language. Strobe lighting, haze and the smoking of herbal cigarettes are used in this prodcution. Age guidance: 14+
