Ask an Ocean Explorer

Event Information

Performed on Fri 5 Apr

Marine biologist of over 20 years, scientific advisor for the BBC’s Blue Planet I and II, and the first British aquanaut to dive to a depth of five kilometres, Dr Jon Copley, explains the science and wonder of the deep.

Almost 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans, and most of those oceans are very deep, nearly half our world lies beneath more than two miles of water. Although people have been crossing the oceans for at least 65,000 years, we only started to explore this hidden face of our planet a couple of centuries ago – however, what we have already discovered in the dark depths is as astounding as the vast unknown that remains. Even television series like Blue Planet I and II have barely scratched the surface of our ocean world.
