Home of The Wriggler

Friday 9th – Saturday 10th April

A warm, witty drama exploring a 20th Century phenomenon – the motor car – and the people who drive, use and make it.

Thoughtful, poetic and playful, Home of The Wriggler mixes interviews, anecdotes, personal experiences and documents about living, working, growing up, falling in love, making/buying/selling/driving/sitting in those mythical modern beasts, cars.

An exploded view of a car’s transmission system serves as a backdrop. Car components are named after the show’s 87 strong fictional cast of characters. Four actors, dressed down in workwear and parka coats, drive the show on using an exercise bike and twelve-speed racer, which have been customised with dynamos and switches to run seven lights, a kettle and a home-made turntable. A hand-cranked flywheel powers the lights, making the show – literally – electrifyingly inventive.

Stan’s Café has a formidable reputation as one of the most innovative theatre companies working in the world today. Stories leap back and forth through time and across the globe. Scenes are emotive, detailed and boiled down, full of local colour and global import. This is a unique, unmissable show about what people drive and what drives people.

“Stan's Café, one of our quirkiest and most ingenious companies...compelling” – Guardian

“Intriguing - at times hauntingly beautiful” – Whatsonstage
