This multi award-winning play, brimming with wonderful characters, is set in 1905 in New York City where Esther, a black seamstress, sews exquisite lingerie for clients who range from wealthy white patrons to prostitutes. She has saved enough to allow her to dream of one day opening a beauty salon for black women, and at 35 years old, longs for a husband and a future. When she begins to receive beautiful letters from a lonesome Caribbean man who is working on the Panama Canal, it looks like life may be about to take a different course.

The cast includes Tanya Moodie as Esther, who most recently appeared opposite Lenny Henry in the much-acclaimed Theatre Royal Bath Production of Fences on tour and in the West End; Dawn Hope as Mrs Dickson, recently seen on television in Coronation Street, and onstage in the highly-acclaimed The Scottsboro Boys at the Young Vic; and Ilan Goodman who returns to the Ustinov Studio after starring in Red Light Winter in the American Season 2012. The cast is completed by Sara Topham (Gwendolyn in The Importance of Being Earnest for the Roundabout Theatre Company, New York), Chu Omambala (King Lear at the Chichester Festival Theatre) and Rochelle Neil (Kitty in Chicago and Mrs. Weasel in Fantastic Mr. Fox at the Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre).

It is a real coup for the Ustinov to be presenting the British premiere of this major American drama. Intimate Apparel is arguably the greatest play of one of America’s leading and most honoured playwrights. Lynn Nottage won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for her play Ruined and in 2010, she was awarded the Distinguished Playwright Award.

5 Star Rating The Ustinov Studio is making history ... Laurence Boswell's first-rate production shows the play's power and subtlety - Observer

5 Star Rating A perfectly tailored timeless drama ... Laurence Boswell's marvellously sensuous production - Mail on Sunday

4 Star Rating An excellent production of a remarkable play ... I don't hesitate to stamp 'thoroughly recommended' on this richly textured import. It's simply too good to miss. Tanya Moodie is unforgettably poignant - Daily Telegraph

4 Star Rating Laurence Boswell's canny, sometimes dashing production makes no attempt to disguise the drama's old-fashioned potboiler tendencies. On the contrary, he plays them up to terrific effect, and it works because Nottage's writing is as delicate as the lace undergarments Esther sews - Guardian

4 Star Rating This ambitious studio theatre punches above its weight with its programme of British premieres. And Laurence Boswell has found another beauty in 'Intimate Apparel' ... Propelled by a magnificent performance by Tanya Moodie who makes Esther watchful, gentle, brittle, naive, pragmatic, composed, hopelessly romantic ... the cast gives superb support ... this warm, rich, complex tale will stay in the memory for a long time - The Times

5 Star Rating Director Laurence Boswell has produced yet another triumph ... Central to the evening is a superlative performance from Tanya Moodie, a performance of the highest calibre, wringing with emotion backed by spirit - Bristol Post

This concluding drama in the theatre’s American Season is the best yet – and that’s saying something... This is storytelling at it's best, and the set is excellent ... Captivating theatre with terrific performances ... Not to be missed - Bath Chronicle

You won’t see a better performance than Tanya Moodie’s as Esther. She is simply stunning as she brings this lovely woman to life... a totally riveting story, told by an exceptional ensemble of actors - Fine Times Recorder
