Christmas Eve

Overview

It is Christmas Eve, 2017. A philosophy professor is on her way to celebrate Christmas with her family when she is dragged out of her taxi, bundled into police headquarters and now sits in an interrogation room. Opposite her the senior officer is cynical, smart and relentless.

The questioning begins. The police believe they have found incriminating evidence against her. Is a terrorist attack imminent or is this a case of state paranoia? As the hands of the clock turn towards midnight, time is running out…

Played out in real time, this riveting drama pits two powerful antagonists head to head. Both think they are saving their country. Only one of them will win.

Niamh Cusack (Judith) has recently been seen on screen in feature films including The Ghoul and Testament of Youth. Television credits include Rebellion (RTE / Netflix), The Best of Men (BBC) and The Hollow Crown (BBC). Her extensive theatre work includes The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time (National Theatre and West End), Playboy of the Western World, Cause Celebre and Dancing at Lughnasa (The Old Vic), The Enchantment, His Dark Materials (National Theatre) and Breathing Corpses (Royal Court).

Patrick Baladi (Thomas) is known for his television roles which include Neil Godwin in The Office, Stephen Holmes in Marcella, Michael Jackson in Stella and Jimmy Lakewell in Line of Duty. Theatre credits include Loyalty (Hampstead Theatre), Albert Speer, Battle Royal (National Theatre) and Camino Real (RSC).

Christmas Eve reunites director Laurence Boswell with writer Daniel Kehlmann and translator Christopher Hampton, following on from the phenomenal success of The Mentor in the Ustinov Studio’s German Season.

Daniel Kehlmann is a multi award-winning literary superstar, "so hot in his native Germany that he has even knocked JK Rowling off the bestseller lists" (Daily Telegraph). Christmas Eve is his latest work.

Christopher Hampton translated both The Mentor and Florian Zeller's 'The Father' for the Ustinov Studio. He won an Academy Award for the screenplay of his play, Dangerous Liaisons. Olivier Award-winning Laurence Boswell is the Artistic Director of the Ustinov Studio and an Associate Artist of the RSC. His recent work has included The Mentor, Trouble in Mind and Intimate Apparel in the Ustinov Studio and A Midsummer Night's Dream in the Main House.
