The Winter’s Tale
by William Shakespeare, directed by Declan Donnellan, designed by Nick Ormerod
22 - 25 February 2017
The multi award-winning Cheek by Jowl is one of the world’s most dazzling companies. Now the company returns to Bath with one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. In The Winter’s Tale, we range across Europe, from court to country, from high tragedy to low comedy, across a time span of sixteen years.
The Winter’s Tale tells of King Leontes who wrongly suspects his wife of adultery with his boyhood friend. Consumed with jealousy, he has her imprisoned and orders their newborn daughter to be abandoned on the shores of Bohemia. However, the child survives…
Cheek by Jowl’s co-artistic director Declan Donnellan was awarded a lifetime achievement prize at this year’s Venice Biennale. The prestigious Golden Lion of Venice prize was presented for his “profound faith in the text” and “ability to bring classic works to life for a contemporary audience”. Declan Donnellan, who formed Cheek By Jowl in 1981 with Nick Ormerod, has directed more than 30 shows for the company.
The cast includes Grace Andrews, Joseph Black, David Carr, Tom Cawte, Ryan Donaldson, Guy Hughes, Orlando James, Sam McArdle, Eleanor McLoughlin, Peter Moreton, Natalie Radmall- Quirke, Joy Richardson, Edward Sayer, Sam Woolf.
