Overview
Following a sell-out season in the West End and hugely acclaimed international tours in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and the USA, Carl Rosa Opera returns to Bath with Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular show.
Starring as The Mikado is Sylvester McCoy, well-known as the seventh incarnation of Doctor Who, and soon to appear in Peter Jackson's major new film of The Hobbit; multi award-winning actress Nichola McAuliffe, best-known on television as Sheila Sabatini in Surgical Spirit and Anita in Coronation Street reprises the role of Katisha which she played in the West End; Rebecca Knight from Operababes plays Yum-Yum with Alistair Donkin, well known for his numerous comic baritone roles with the original D’Oyly Carte Opera as Ko-Ko and Mark Llewellyn Evans who is soon to appear in Guy Richie’s new Sherlock Holmes film sequel as Pish-Tush.
The Mikado transports you to the magnificent Japanese court of Titipu. This hilarious tale of love, corruption in local government, marriage, executions and heroics, brings to life some of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most colourful and popular characters, from Ko-Ko the Lord High Executioner, Pooh-Bah and Nanki-Poo, to the three little maids. The score is a sparkling gem, speeding the story along with a host of well-known songs including Three Little Maids, Tit Willow and A Wand’ring Minstrel I.
This stunning production features the Oscar-winning settings and costumes from Mike Leigh’s award-winning film Topsy-Turvy and Gilbert’s authentic prompt book is used as a source for the direction. Audiences will experience a glorious performance exactly as it would have been on the opening night of The Mikado at the Savoy Theatre in 1885.
