The King's Speech
Overview
‘ What’s the one essential thing a King must do? He must BELIEVE he is King’
This is the world premiere of the original play which inspired the hugely successful film, the winner of four Academy Awards and seven British Academy Film Awards.
When King Edward VIII abdicates for the love of Wallis Simpson, his terrified brother Bertie is thrust into the spotlight and crowned King George VI of England. In a time of national crisis a debilitating speech impediment leaves Bertie incapable of speaking for his country on the brink of World War II.
In a room at 146 Harley Street his wife Elizabeth, (the future Queen Mother), has arranged for him to meet the maverick Australian speech therapist Lionel Logue. Breaking all royal protocol, the King and his oddball therapist embark together on an unconventional journey to correct the King’s stammer and help him deliver the radio-address that will inspire his country.
Charles Edwards is well-known to Bath audiences for his leading roles with the Peter Hall Company. He starred in The 39 Steps in both the West End and on Broadway and played Michael Palin in the recent television drama, Holy Flying Circus.
Playing Lionel Logue is Jonathan Hyde who has worked extensively with the RSC. He is also well‑known for his film and television roles in Titanic, The Mummy, Jumanji and the final series of Spooks.
Emma Fielding has worked extensively with the RSC and National Theatre and won a Theatre World Award for Private Lives on Broadway. Recent television roles include Cranford and The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher.
Ian McNeice has had an extensive stage and film career with television credits including Doc Martin, Dr Who, Chef! and Edge of Darkness.
Joss Ackland is one of the most distinguished UK actors of the last 50 years. His numerous stage, television and film roles range from Evita! and Shadowlands to Lethal Weapon 2.
The King’s Speech is directed by Adrian Noble, former Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company.
