2008 marks the 20th anniversary of my theatre company and the sixth summer residency at the Theatre Royal.
Our season offers four new main house productions and a unique collaboration in the egg. The first two plays deal with the past, and the other two with the crazy difficulties of the near present. Highlighted in all four plays is women’s position in society. Accordingly, the company is led by three extraordinary actresses, Catherine McCormack, Stephanie Cole and Alison Steadman.
Nicola Frei has taken Henry James’s great novel The Portrait of a Lady and turned it into a play that reminds us of the nightmare limitations of a woman’s life at the end of the 19th Century – even if she had money and position. Alongside this new play is Ibsen’s great work which calls for the emancipation of women, A Doll’s House, in a new version by Stephen Mulrine.
Alan Bennett’s Enjoy and Peter Nichol’s Born in the Gardens are two highly original plays first seen in the 1970s and very ripe for revival.
