‘At first glance it should look like your classic WI calendar. Jams, cakes, sewing and all that.
Except for one tiny thing…’
Calendar Girls is based on the film of the same name which was one of the most successful British films of all time and one of the top fifty grossing films in UK cinema history.
A group of extraordinary women, members of a very ordinary Yorkshire WI, persuade one another to pose for a charity calendar with a difference – no more photos of Wharfedale Bridges or Norman churches for them. Overcoming their initial reserve, the friends drop their dressing gowns, modesty spared only by artfully placed cakes, knitting and flower arrangements.
Puzzling their husbands, mortifying their children, and riding the wrath of the outraged WI, they spark a global phenomenon. But as media interest snowballs, the Calendar Girls find themselves exposed in ways they’d never expected, revealing more than they’d ever planned.
Calendar Girls is a very English story with a very English heart. Quirky, poignant and hilarious, it is based on uplifting, inspiring true events.
PATRICIA HODGE is well-known for Rumpole of The Bailey, The Cloning of Joanna May and recent West End appearances in His Dark Materials and Boeing Boeing and plays Miss April. LYNDA BELLINGHAM, who is best known for presenting Loose Women and for her starring roles in Second Thoughts, Doctor Who and All Creatures Great and Small, will play Miss July. SIAN PHILLIPS is probably best-known for her role as Livia in I, Claudius. Her many West End credits include Pal Joey, A Little Night Music and Marlene.
JULIA HILLS starred in the BBC’s long running comedy 2 Point 4 Children. ELAINE C SMITH is one of Scotland’s best known and best loved actresses and comedy entertainers whose starring roles include City Lights, Naked Video, Rab C.Nesbitt, 2000 Actes of Sky and 55 Degrees North and will be Miss June. GAYNOR FAYE’s varied credits include Coronation Street, Playing the Field, Fat Friends, Dancing on Ice and The Chase. She will play Miss March. BRIGIT FORSYTH is best known for her long running role as Thelma in The Likely Lads and Whatever Happened to The Likely Lads and now plays Miss May.
Tim Firth co-wrote the film Calendar Girls and has also written this stage version. He is also the author of All Quiet On The Preston Front, Neville’s Island, The Flint Street Nativity and the films Blackball and Kinky Boots.
